What is Latinx?
Welcome to FrankLegend.com where we review great content that has gone viral. Today we will learn about the Latinx community.
LatinX is a term used to refer to people that do not identify as either male or female. They refer to themselves as non-binary and other terms like Non-Binary/Trans Fem or 2 Spirit/NonBinary, Genderfluid/All of the above and Designated female at birth/shapeshifting girl(probably) as seen quoted in Edward Rami’s video above. Check that one out. It’s gone viral at 40,000+ views and counting. In order to appease their identities and feelings, it seems that the mainstream media has focused all their efforts on these issues rather than the rest of the issues facing 97% of normal Latinos and Latinas. Issues like you know poverty, education, financial literacy and diabetes. That’s not too important though.
According to a Pew Research Center survey, “about one-in-four U.S. Hispanics have heard of Latinx, but just 3% use it”. This is interesting news and you can check out the full scholarly article –> here.
Latinos are being vocal
A popular Facebook page called “Latino Pride” has opposed this term and the rhetoric behind this ideology. In recent polls that they have conducted on their Facebook page, we see a huge divide and interest in this controversial topic. It is no surprise that many Latinos and Latinas have also joined in the conversation to voice their opposition to the Latinx movement through out the comments section. You can clearly see their support for the heterosexual community. It is evident that 97% of Latinos do NOT like this term. The Washington Post has also written in depth on this topic and reported that 61% of the Latino community actually prefer the word “Hispanic” over any other label. Wow. So much for Latino Pride lol
This angst among Latinos has nothing to do with the LGBT community but rather the insult this term does to the identity of heterosexual Latinos and Latinas. It would be like calling all LGBT members heterosexual rather than their preferred terms or identities irrespective of their sentiments.
This wave has even transitioned into corporate America. When applying to a new job in the US, Latinos previously had the option of picking their race as Latinos or Hispanics. Now that option has been conflated with the term “LatinX” which seems to almost blur the lines between heterosexual Latinos and the LatinX/LGBT community.
More content creators have rallied opposition to the term LatinX because it strikes a cord among the Latino heterosexual community. Ask any Latino grandfather or grandmother what LatinX means and they will most certainly be dumbfounded. Older generations never had to face this strange new term, that has only recently been created, and only popularized by corporate America and the mainstream media. Millions of dollars have been spent on advertising and marketing to prop up this label in order to appease a small minority of people in our Latino community.Â
Homophobia?
In today’s cancel culture any dissent or individual thought is considered “violent, harmful or racist”. Nowadays people are scared to speak up to any community because they risk being “cancelled”. Latinx is not a popular term. That is a fact. The heterosexual community considers it fictional and absolutely ludicrous because there are only 2 biological genders. Male and Female. To support this fact cannot be deemed homophobic or harmful because it is based on 5,000 years of history and science.
On the other hand, attacking or bullying the LGBT community is also absolutely unacceptable. No community should be ridiculed or ostracized for their personal preferences. Homosexuality is as old as life itself and we should protect our LGBT brothers and sisters. Unfortunately in today’s environment, peace and love is no longer a slogan of the marginalized groups. Today the flag raised only trumpets protests and mob violence when they don’t get their way.
Is corporate America our master?
Corporate America needs to stop getting involved in our communities and dictating how we interact with each other. As long as harassment from either the heterosexual community or LGBT community does not occur, peace will always follow.Â
The reality is that this is only a 1st world problem. Latin America has no focus on this issue and Latin American people could care even less. In Latin America there are only 2 genders and society is focused on more important issues like poverty that hurts millions of people daily. Not knowing if you will have a meal tomorrow is a higher concern for many Latin Americans than their gender identity. It is a dangerous world to live in LATAM and the problems US Latinos face is very miniscule compared to what our Latin American brothers face every single day.
Recent turn of events show us the consequences of failed liberal and company policies. The Heterosexual community has no problem with the LGBT community as long as we respect our boundaries. The problem occurs when corporate America gets involved and tries to dictate the way we should refer to each other in our respective communities. Even worse some could face harsh penalties for not supporting a movement that would go against the religious beliefs of the Latino conservative community. If you think objectively, corporate America is dividing our communities by getting involved in our societal affairs because now our money and well-being is placed at risk for both heterosexuals and the LGBT community. This affects both of us. Let me explain.
Who is leading the Latino community?
This is something we as a Latino community should acknowledge. Who is labeling us? And for what purpose?
LatinX is not something that just came to be over night but it strangely got support from Corporate America very quickly in the US. Millions of dollars were burnt at companies like Buzzfeed when they started laying off mostly LatinX and LGBT content creators when it wasn’t benefiting them in views anymore. Here’s an article detailing it all. Ouch. So much for inclusivity..
Buzzfeed is a perfect example of what happens when we as a people allow corporate America and the MSM to get involved and play referee with our personal affairs. The media and corporations constantly fail to recognize us and our issues that ultimately never really represent us properly, especially Latinos. Time and time again we see giant corporations spend millions of dollars on “Latino-esque” initiatives/programs only to later dissolve them because it did not “make profits” or it wasn’t “beneficial” to the company anymore. Does anybody remember Fox Latino?
This appeasement strategy has only failed the Latino community and humiliated us further but likewise it has exposed corporate America’s greed and disingenuous appeal to the Latino community and other minority communities as well. But Latinos are not surprised. We know this always happens. Once companies are done using us for “diversity in the workplace” and to show how “inclusive” they are, they fire you. This is what happened with Fox Latino, Buzzfeed and many other companies that have tried it.Â
Now there is plenty of blame to go around but ultimately us Latinos need to speak up and become more vocal about these issues. It is about time we speak when necessary and no longer bow down to Univision or Telemundo or any other media conglomerates that dictate how our community should “behave.” Latinos are the fastest growing population, most diverse(Latinx included), bilingual and hard working community with the best resources in all of the Americas. We are a beautiful group of people with a rich background. We will not be told how we should name ourselves, how we should identify ourselves and how we should conduct ourselves in society anymore. Include that in your next company policies!
